HIGHLIGHTS :

Mount Ararat (Ağrı Dağı) is not a mountain you simply walk past. The highest peak in Turkey and a sacred site in three major religious traditions — Christianity, Islam, and Armenian culture — it rises as a perfectly isolated volcanic cone to 5,137 metres above the eastern Anatolian plateau, visible from three countries and carrying a weight of myth and history that very few mountains anywhere can match. This seven-day expedition approaches the summit via the classic southern route from Çevirme Village, with a structured acclimatisation strategy designed to give every participant the best possible chance of reaching the top. Along the way the itinerary threads in two experiences unique to this corner of Turkey: a boat crossing to the 10th-century Armenian Cathedral Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island, and an afternoon at Ishak Pasha Palace — the 17th-century Ottoman hilltop complex with Ararat filling its northern skyline. This is not a walk-up; it is a genuine high-altitude mountaineering objective that rewards preparation, patience, and a willingness to move slowly in thin air.

Arrival in Van — Akdamar Island  Meet at Van Airport. Scenic drive to Lake Van. Boat crossing to Akdamar Island, visiting the 10th-century Cathedral Church of the Holy Cross. Transfer to Doğubayazıt.

Practical Notes

  • Meeting point: Van Ferit Melen Airport (IATA: VAN). All arrivals collected; group waits for the last flight.
  • Akdamar ferry: Seasonal (typically April–November). The crossing takes 15–20 minutes from Gevaş pier.
  • Driving distances: Van to Gevaş ~35 km; Gevaş to Doğubayazıt ~95 km (D975 highway via Muradiye).
  • First dinner: High-carbohydrate meal recommended. Guide briefs the group on the full climb plan, pacing strategy, and individual kit review.
  • Equipment check: Guides inspect boots, crampons (if brought), sleeping bags, and layering systems at the hotel before departure day.

Doğubayazıt to Mount Ararat Base  Transfer by minibus to Çevirme Village (2,200 m). Begin ascent through sub-alpine grassland to Camp 1 at 3,200 m. Dinner and overnight under the stars.

Distance

~9 km

Elevation Gain

+1,000 m (from Çevirme to Camp 1)

Duration

5–6 hrs

Type

Hike

Practical Notes

  • Permits: Mount Ararat requires a climbing permit from the Turkish Ministry of the Interior. All permits are arranged by the operator — carry your passport on the mountain at all times.
  • Horses: Pack animals carry communal tents, cooking equipment, and group food supplies from Çevirme to Camp 2. Personal kit beyond the daypack is carried by horse.
  • Water: Reliable stream at the Camp 1 area. Purification tablets or a filter recommended as backup.
  • Altitude: 3,200 m is sufficient to trigger mild altitude-related symptoms (headache, nausea, disturbed sleep) in susceptible individuals. Hydrate aggressively — target 3–4 litres per day from here onward.
  • Medication: Acetazolamide (Diamox) is commonly used as an altitude prophylactic. Discuss with your physician before the expedition; the guide carries supplemental oxygen for emergency use.

Acclimatization — Push to 4,000–4,200 m  Morning hike above Camp 1 to 4,000–4,200 m to stimulate altitude adaptation. Return to Camp 1 for rest, hot meal, and early sleep ahead of the high-camp day.

Distance

~8 km round trip

Elevation Gain

+800–1,000 m

Duration

5–6 hrs

Type

Hike

Practical Notes

  • Pulse oximetry: The guide takes SpO₂ readings at 9 am and 4 pm. Readings consistently below 75% at rest may prompt a recommended descent.
  • Symptoms to report immediately: Severe headache not relieved by ibuprofen, nausea with vomiting, confusion or loss of coordination, severe fatigue at rest, or any change in gait.
  • Hydration target: 4 litres per day. Avoid alcohol entirely from Day 2 onward.
  • Sun exposure: UV radiation increases approximately 10% per 1,000 m of altitude. At 4,000 m the UV index can be extreme — factor 50 sunscreen, a brimmed hat, and quality sunglasses (UV400 or glacier glasses) are not optional.
  • Pacing: The acclimatisation hike should be slow — slower than feels natural. The phrase used by experienced high-altitude guides is ‘rest step’: one full breath per step above 4,000 m is a reasonable target.

Ascent to Camp 2 — 4,200 m  Pack equipment (horse support available to Camp 2). Climb from Camp 1 through the boulder fields and glacial moraine to Camp 2 at 4,200 m. Afternoon rest and preparation for summit push.

Distance

~5 km

Elevation Gain

+1,000 m

Duration

4–5 hrs

Type

Hike

Practical Notes

  • Camp 2 altitude: 4,200 m. Most summit-day accidents occur on descent from this altitude and above — fatigue is the primary risk factor. Arriving well-rested at Camp 2 matters more than arriving quickly.
  • Temperature: Overnight temperatures at Camp 2 in summer typically range from -5°C to -15°C. A sleeping bag rated to -20°C is strongly recommended — cold nights impair sleep quality and directly affect summit performance.
  • Summit preparation checklist: Crampons fitted and tested, headlamp + spare batteries, all layers available (down jacket, wind shell, insulated gloves), 2 litres water in insulated flasks (water freezes above 4,500 m), summit pack no heavier than 8 kg.
  • Summit weather window: The guide will make a final go/no-go decision at the planned departure time based on wind speed, cloud cover, and participant condition. Trust this assessment — the mountain will be there again.

Summit Push to 5,137 m — Descent to Village  Alpine start at 1–2 am. 5–7 hours to the summit of Greater Ararat (5,137 m). Return to Camp 2 for rest and meal, then full descent to Çevirme and transfer to Doğubayazıt.

Distance

Elevation Gain

+937 m to summit

Duration

5–7 hrs ascent · 2–3 hrs descent to Camp 2 · 3–4 hrs descent to village

Type

Summit

Practical Notes

  • Alpine start rationale: An early start targets the summit before the afternoon weather window closes. Summer afternoons on Ararat frequently bring convective cloud, reduced visibility, and lightning risk above 4,500 m.
  • Turnaround policy: The guide enforces a turnaround time — typically 10 am, or earlier if weather deteriorates — regardless of summit proximity. A responsible guide will turn a group around 100 metres below the summit if conditions require it.
  • Crampons and ice axe: Crampons are essential equipment (12-point or 10-point). An ice axe is recommended for guided clients and required for independent climbers on steep snow above 4,800 m.
  • Frostbite and cold injury: All exposed skin must be covered above 4,500 m in any wind. Face masks or balaclavas, insulated gloves, and goggles (not sunglasses) for any conditions involving wind or blowing snow.
  • Hydration on summit day: Drink before you feel thirsty. At altitude, thirst response is suppressed. Aim for 250 ml per hour even if you do not feel the need.
  • Descent pace: The majority of mountaineering accidents on Ararat occur on the descent when fatigue, softening snow, and reduced concentration converge. Maintain crampon discipline and trekking-pole use all the way to the snow line.

Doğubayazıt Sightseeing  Morning visit to the magnificent Ishak Pasha Palace (17th–18th century). Explore the ancient ruins of Eski Doğubayazıt and the nearby meteor crater. Optional bazaar visit.

Practical Notes

  • Ishak Pasha Palace: Open daily, entry fee applies. Best light for photography is late afternoon when the palace faces west. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the visit.
  • Physical state: Most participants experience significant fatigue on Day 6. The sightseeing programme is designed to keep everyone active but not over-exert post-summit legs.
  • Final dinner: The group’s last shared meal together. A celebratory dinner at a local restaurant is typically arranged by the guide — eastern Turkish cuisine is exceptional, particularly the kebabs, stuffed vegetables, and Van breakfast spreads.
  • Debrief: The guide conducts a full expedition debrief over dinner — what worked, what could be improved, and recommendations for future expeditions.

Departure  Transfer to Van or Ağrı Airport for onward flights. Tour concludes.

Transfers depart for Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN, approximately 95 km) or Ağrı Airport (AJI, approximately 50 km from Doğubayazıt) according to individual flight schedules. Both airports handle domestic Turkish routes connecting to Istanbul and Ankara for onward international connections. Transfer timing is coordinated the previous evening based on confirmed flight departures.

Practical Notes

  • Van Airport (VAN): ~95 km from Doğubayazıt, ~1 hr 15 min drive. Domestic connections to Istanbul (IST/SAW) and Ankara (ESB).
  • Ağrı Airport (AJI): ~50 km, ~45 min drive. Smaller airport with fewer connections — confirm your route before booking.
  • Return luggage: All equipment and personal items not carried on the mountain have been held at the hotel. Full luggage consolidation the evening before departure.
